The House of Science

The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is the largest public institution devoted to research in Spain and the third largest in Europe. Its mission is to foster, coordinate, develop and promote scientific and technological multidisciplinary research, in order to contribute to the advance of knowledge and to provide economic, social and cultural development, as well as staff training and advice to public and private entities.

CSIC plays an important role in scientific and technological policy, since it performs from basic research to the transfer of knowledge to the productive sector. Its research is carried out by its centers and institutes, which are spread across all the autonomous regions, and its more than 15,000 staff, of whom more than 3,000 are staff researchers and the another 3.000 are scientists who are still under training programs. CSIC has 6% of all the staff dedicated to Research and Development in Spain, and generates approximately 20% of all the Spanish scientific production. It also manages a range of important facilities; the most complete and extensive network of specialist libraries, and also has joint research units.

The House of Science in Seville is the main challenge of the Spanish National Research Council in Andalusia, to enhance public understanding of science and how to produce scientific knowledge. Through all kinds of events such as exhibitions, conferences, seminars and workshops, among others, the House of Science is presented as a reference center specifically dedicated to the dissemination of scientific knowledge. The main goal of the "House of the Science" is to enhance public recognition of our researchers and their work in an engaging and exciting manner. The project aims at further bringing closer researchers and public and encouraging more young people to start careers in science by changing the image of the researchers in the society. Science is shown as a part of our daily lives, researchers as ordinary people and their profession as fundamental for the well-being of our society.

Specific objectives are:
  • To promote the interests of the people in scientific research and technological progress in Andalusia and globally.
  • To serve as a link between science and education (from primary school to the university).
  • To raise awareness and involve national and international researchers in educational activities and dissemination.
  • To promote the interest of the citizens in science; this at the same time stimulates the efforts of researchers to disseminate their knowledge.
  • To increase the interest of young people and general public in science, promoting direct communication with scientists, through conferences, round tables and exhibitions.
  • To promote the dissemination and conservation activities of the scientific heritage.
  • To ensure the approach and the feedback among scientific institutions and enterprises in Andalusia, creating a link between business, science and society.
